Watertown Children’s Theatre presents Oliver!, June 15 at 7 pm, June 16 at 2 pm and 7 pm, and June 17 at 2 pm, Charles Mosesian Theater, Arsenal Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street, Watertown. Based on the classic novel by Charles Dickens, this lively musical combines drama, humor, and great music for a fantastic production with participants in Grades K-9 including Newton’s own Rosie Carroll, Gabriela Ettinger, Caroline Hoban, Sonia Joffe, Amelia Kane, Ava Lyons, Rachel Manning, Sara Manning, Myles Murphy, Riley Raker, Jacob Resnick, Thomas Sasdi, Katrina Secinaro, Liam Walsh, Anna Weylman-Farwell, and Nichol Weylman-Farwell. Think Summer with NCE

Summer Kids & Teens programs with Newton Community Education are filling fast! But we still have openings in lots of our week-long programs for elementary and middle school kids. Elementary schoolers and younger kids can get artsy in our Lions & Tigers & Bears class, get dramatic in Young Broadway, get into science in any of our Wicked Cool science and engineering programs, or get sweaty in our Soccer & Sports or Flag Football camps. These are just some of our many still-available options. We’ve also added new programs the last two weeks of August, including Wicked Phab Physics Lab, Wicked Wacky Lab Week, and Create a TV Show. Middle schoolers have lots of opportunities to get technical with us this summer: try our new Adventures in IT, Picture Projects, or Music Masterpieces with Garageband classes, for example. High schoolers can get a leg up on the college application process with our summer SAT prep classes or college essay writing class. And of course we have several sessions of Driver’s Ed this summer at both high schools. We have summer offerings for adults too, and kids ages 16 and up are always welcome in our adult classes. Abbey Villa S.C. with twenty-four teams has expanded to Newton and offering (2) free soccer clinics for B/G U8 – U12 on 5/25 and 6/1/12 from 5:30pm-6:30pm at Orr Field at 992 Dedham St, Newton, MA.

Help Wanted at NCE

At Newton Community Education we would like to expand our Kids & Teens program. To do that we need some help. We are looking for an elementary school parent available to work part-time (maybe as few as five hours a week or so) to help plan our Fall program. You would be involved in brainstorming ideas for new programs and recruiting teachers to work for NCE. The ideal candidate for this position is an elementary school parent who has been involved in the PTO and has some awareness of other Kids program offerings around Newton. Lily of the Valley taking over your yard? Don’t put those Iris divisions in the compost bin. Trade them in! Use flower pots, milk cartons, coffee cans, yogurt tubs, even plastic bags to pot up your cast-offs. Early drop-offs okay. This is recycling at its best! Exchanges free, but please watch for the box for voluntary donations. This is a project started by a Bigelow student, now at NNHS, to raise money for worthy METCO students. Please join the Newton LigerBots (www.ligerbots.com) for their annual spring event, Meet the Robots taking place at the Hyde Community Center in Newton Highlands on Saturday May 19th from 1-4pm. The event will feature robots from this year’s FIRST Robotics, FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Lego League Competitions. There will also be an underwater robot from the MIT Sea Perch Competition and iRobot will be there with some robots of their own. In addition, there will be a number of STEM (Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering) oriented activities with prizes. Bike Newton Group Bike Rides – Every Monday

Mondays at 6pm BikeNewton leads a group Bike Ride starting and ending at the Newton Main Library on Homer St. Arrive at 5:45. These are “No Rider Left Behind” rides; Anyone may ride as long as their bikes are in good working order, and they are confident they can handle a leisurely 7 to 10 mile ride. Children must be with an adult, all riders must wear helmets, and adhere to safety rules of the road. We will go to scenic points in and around Newton. Music @ Oak Hill: Fundraising Success

Many thanks to the Oak Hill community for its support of the music program! The refreshment table raised $156 over both concert nights, bringing the total this school year to $609. Both Mr. Miller and Mr. Cutler will be able to choose how to spend these funds to best support all the music groups at our school. Look for an update in the Fall as to their choices. The planning is in full swing for our Eighth Annual Waban Village Day. It will be filled with its traditional events, rides, entertainment, food and, of course, the family Fun Run starting off the festivities at 10AM in front of the Waban Library Center, 1608 Beacon Street. Even if you don’t participate, come down to cheer on the racers and meet our Grand Marshal, Sheldon Rothman, the oldest PMC participate at 83yrs young. Our corporate angel Whole Foods will be on hand, helping us out with some healthy food selections as well as hosting a booth. Brookline Music School ensembles and young emerging artists from Brookline will perform a variety of classic songs and original music at A Music Festival for Brookline, BROOKstock: Where 1969 Meets 2012 concert on Friday, June 1st at 7:30pm in the Ellsworth Theatre at Pine Manor College.

Brookline Music School ensembles will be performing music from 1969, the final year in an amazing decade of American popular music, one which laid the foundation for all that followed. Original music from Brookline’s most promising young bands, singer/songwriters, and composers will also be featured. BROOKstock seeks to contrast music from the 1960’s with music being created here and now by today’s young musicians. The similarities and differences between the two will, we hope, make for an exciting and entertaining evening of live music.
