Giving Project Donations will be open for two more weeks (until June 14), so please be generous. We are hoping to raise $2000 this year!
The organizations selected by Oak Hill and Brown Students address a number of issues in our community:
- There is a poverty problem in Newton but we rarely see it. One Can Help assists people who are often ignored because they are in the juvenile court system and can’t afford even a bus pass or a laptop.
- Suicide is among the leading causes of death among 15-44-year olds. Project Semicolon offers help and understanding to those with mental health issues to reduce the stigma attached to those issues.
- Being of different backgrounds or faiths shouldn’t prevent people from seeing their commonalities. Kids 4 Peace trains kids from diverse backgrounds to be interfaith peace leaders.
- A Newton family founded Cape Crafts 4 Kids to expose underserved kids to art by providing art supplies and programs at a large food pantry on Cape Cod. They hope to expand to Boston food pantries this year but need funding to make it happen.

Newton Serves Volunteers – We want to thank all the amazing volunteers who worked hard weeding, raking, mulching, and planting the Oak Hill grounds to make the front of the school look spectacular! Thank you Oak Hill families, Principal Harutunian, local church organizations, and team leaders Katherina Elbert and Shawna Conaghan Murphy.
National Teacher Appreciation Week — A Scrumptious Success
A heartfelt thank you goes out to over 80 families who contributed to the National Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! The appreciation lunch and breakfast treats were a huge success because so many families generously donated their time, cooking, and money. The teachers, aides, administrators, guidance counselors, secretaries, custodians, librarians, nurses, substitutes, athletic staff, and coaches were so appreciative to be recognized for their hard work and dedication. Thanks again to everyone who showed their gratitude to the entire Oak Hill staff by contributing to the special week.
The PTO would like to extend a special note of thanks to Shawna Conaghan Murphy, who was the lead organizer for this event and countless other staff appreciation events over the years! Thank you, Shawna!
Hopefully by now you’ve all heard about the Giving Project! If not–it’s an annual community potluck dinner where 5 chosen non-profit organizations share their missions, and potluck participants vote on how to distribute the donation money (collected before, during, and after the potluck)!
Now it’s time to RSVP and donate to five fantastic organizations which deserve our support!
The potluck dinner will take place on Thursday, May 30 from 6-8 in the Brown Cafeteria. Reps from our chosen organizations will each speak about their mission, and you decide which organizations will get your share of our collective financial donations–all while you enjoy a delicious dinner with other members of the Brown/Oak Hill community!

National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10. The PTO is organizing a final appreciation lunch and bagel breakfast to show our appreciation and gratitude to the 100+ Oak Hill Middle School Teachers and Staff on:
Lunch – Wednesday, May 8th, from 11:30 to 12:45 in the school library.

Volunteers Wanted for Oak Hill Spring Cleanup on Sunday, April 28 from 1pm-3pm
Please help beautify the grounds of Oak Hill Middle School. This is a fun and rewarding community effort to make Oak Hill extra warm and inviting for all of our children and teachers as they complete the school year. Come solo or bring your middle schooler with you to help plant, weed, rake, mulch, and sweep. Please bring gardening tools (rakes, shovels, buckets and gloves), if you have any. Thank you! Can’t make it on the 28th? No worries, you can still be a part of making our school beautiful! We need volunteers to help water the flowers during the months of May and June, and it only takes seven minutes. You can volunteer to water for one time only or sign up for a recurring day of the week. Whether it’s early morning or sunset, the flowers are always happy to see you! It is a fun way to be active in your child’s school.
We welcome donations too – We are looking for contributions to improve our building and grounds. Please feel free to donate any plantings—from your favorite perennial to smiling pansies! We need shade plantings. If flowers are not your thing, we also wish for:
• one large flower pot
• watering hose
• an oscillating sprinkler
We are delighted to announce that this spring, the Giving Project is back!
The Giving Project is a special community event that brings families from Brown and Oak Hill together over a delicious meal while raising awareness and funds for some of the many charities supported by our students, faculty, and staff.
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to nominate a favorite non-profit organization, along with a brief summary of why they support it. Nominations are due by Thursday, April 25. The nominations are then shared with student and teacher representatives from both the Brown and the Oak Hill communities, and five charities are selected to be showcased at our fundraising community potluck dinner on Thursday, May 30. The funds raised at the dinner are then shared among the five charities. We can’t wait to hear about the charity or cause that inspires you!

The Oak Hill PTO is running a Spirit Wear fundraiser, to help fund the full range of initiatives we are rolling out during the 2018-2019 school year. From community events to teacher support, educational enrichment programs, and student events, your purchase of spirit wear helps improve the educational experience for all our students.
Just $15 for t-shirts, $35 for hoodies and $25 for sweatpants. Sample designs are below. The last day to place your order is Friday, March 8th!

Oak Hill is collecting donations for Cradles to Crayons. A collection box will be in the main lobby from from January 22 to February 1. Cradle to Crayons is a non-profit organization that helps to provide for children and families in need. Donated items need to be new or gently used. We are looking for-
The Most-Needed Items:
- Boys Sweater/Sweatshirts
- Boys Shirts
- Girls Shirts
- New PJs
- Winter boots
What They Accept:
- Clothing and coats
- New socks, underwear, and pajamas (only accepted in new condition)
- Shoes, boots, sneakers, and sandals
- Books, especially baby board books
- Diapers, all sizes
- Baby equipment
- New hygiene supplies for ages 0 to 12
