Dear parents of upcoming 9th grade Newton South students,
The Newton South community looks forward to meeting your sons and daughters on Friday, June 10 at the Newton South Step Up Day. On Friday, all 8th grade students will arrive at Newton South at 11:30 a.m. with Brown and Oak Hill teachers. They will then meet South staff members and current students who will speak about the transition from middle school to high school and the array of clubs and activities at South. The itinerary for the day is shown below.
Speaking on behalf of the Newton South Administration we look forward to meeting you in the fall.

Dear 8th Grade Families,
On Thursday, June 16th, the 8th grade class will be taking a trip to Canobie Lake Park in New Hampshire. This should be a fun and exciting way to celebrate the end of middle school.
The cost of the trip is $40.00. Please make checks payable to Oak Hill Middle Schoo and include your student’s name on the check. Checks and permission slips can be brought directly to the main office, where there will be a box to deposit slips and money.
Students and chaperones will board the bus around 8:30 am from Oak Hill and will return between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. Please make arrangements to pick your student up around that time. The Newton 4:15 and 5:15 late buses will be available, as usual.
If you are interested in being a chaperone for this trip, please contact Doreen Vaglica, Executive Assistant, at 617-559-9200 or firstname.lastname@example.org. A CORI sheet must be filled out if you plan to chaperone. Doreen Vaglica will have these for you.
A few suggestions:
- Pack a brown bag lunch or bring some extra money; you will get hungry and thirsty.
- Strongly consider using sunscreen.
- Wear a bathing suit under your clothes if you plan to enjoy the water rides.
As always, if the cost of this trip is a hardship for your family please contact Ms. Thompson. Support will be available to ensure all students participate.
We are looking forward to celebrating the end of the year together!
Dear Eighth Grade Families,
It has been a great pleasure to becoming acquainted with your children these past two years! It is evident that they will leave Oak Hill as young ladies and gentlemen who are ready to explore the opportunities high school offers.
To mark this milestone in your child’s life, please accept this invitation to attend the 8th Grade ‘Moving On’ Ceremony on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. in the gymnasium. We anticipate that the program will be completed by 11:00 a.m. Eighth grade students may leave school with their parents/guardian at the conclusion of the program. Of course, students are welcome to remain here at school until our 11:30 dismissal on this day. In addition, the Oak Hill P.T.O. will be providing refreshments immediately after the program in the cafeteria.
We look forward to seeing you. Congratulations to you too, for reaching this milestone in your life.

Newton South HS is holding an informational Athletic meeting for incoming ninth graders. This will be held Tuesday May 17, at 7:00 pm in the Newton South Field House, 140 Brandeis Rd. The Athletic Director, Scott Perrin, will open the evening by informing the students and parents what is expected in High School Athletics. There will be tables set up with every sport represented and a coach or student athlete there to answer any questions.
Dear Parents of 8th Graders,
We have received several calls asking if 8th graders have school on Friday. We are expecting students to be in school on Friday. The teachers will continue the Nature’s Classroom festivities: reflections in journals and then a Variety Show where students will present their skits to one another in the auditorium. So, the camp festivities will continue!
We expect that the buses bringing students back from New Hampshire will arrive this evening around 8:00-8:30PM. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to do an automated ‘Connect Ed’ call to all of you, but students can certainly use the school phones to call parents upon their arrival. I will be at a School Committee meeting then, so Mr. Yee will greet the buses and will be in charge. Continue reading
We have learned that due to inclement weather predicted for New Hampshire on Friday, the 8th Grade Nature’s Classroom field trip will be returning Thursday night instead of Friday afternoon. The bus will depart from Freedom, New Hampshire around 5:30PM on Thursday and will return to Oak Hill around 8PM to perhaps 8:30PM depending on traffic. At that time, the students will be able to enter the building, make calls home, and wait to be picked up. If you have any questions, call the school office on Thursday 617-559-9200.
8th Grade parents: Are you wondering what life will be like for you and for your incoming NSHS freshman next fall? What questions do you have? The Oak Hill PTO invites you (and others who are interested) to an informal coffee/discussion with Oak Hill parents who already have children at NSHS. April 7, from 7PM to 8PM in the Oak Hill library.
